About Sefton Ladies Community Choir

Sefton Ladies Community Choir is a friendly, informal group of women who share a love of singing. We enjoy a wide range of music- classics, ballads, folk songs, musicals –  as well as more modern compositions.

We usually sing arrangements for 3 voices: soprano, second soprano and alto and whilst you don’t have to be able to read music to enjoy singing with us – it can help! Don’t worry if you don’t know which part will suit you best – you can try out different sections until you find where you are most comfortable.

“Although I have only been with the choir for a year, I feel I am with a happy group of ladies who can forget their problems for two hours and focus on the enjoyment gained from singing. Sometimes it is difficult as, like many ladies in the choir, I cannot read music, but, with the help of our talented MD we succeed and make a good sound. Its great when it all comes together! I wish I had joined twenty years ago.”

This unique, women only community choir was founded in 1979 and has been going strong ever since. We are based in Formby but our members come from all around the locality. Our rehearsals are currently held in Elbow Lane Methodist Church Hall, Formby, L37 4AF.

We mostly perform for fun but, in the past, we have been known to enter competitions. Sefton Ladies Choir is 3 times winner of the Choir section of the Crosby Music Festival – the last time in March 2012. One time we got enough points to win the Mayors Cup – even though we were the only choir standing!

Musical Director: Ceri Williams is currently our Musical Director. Ceri has been a brilliant Musical Accompanist at Sefton Ladies Community Choir for a number of years and he is also Musical Director of another local choir Octave. Ceri has undertaken the roles of both Musical Director and Accompanist – so he knows the kind of music we like – and how to get the best out of us!

Committee: The choir is supported by a small but active committee: Alison Gibbon ( Chair); Diane Bailey (Treasurer); Barbara Garner and Hilary Fass

President: Pat Lynch is a strong supporter and longstanding member of the Choir. Pat was previously the Chair and her leadership ensured the choir kept growing and developing over the years, under different Musical Directors. Pat continues to support the Choir as President, Ambassador and Cheer Leader!

Singing for our supper….!

We enjoy performing at local community organisations and events – so whether you’re looking for something informal or planning for a special occasion or event , just get in touch. Over recent years we’ve held regular concerts as well as performing at nursing homes / hospices / churches and community organisations. We’ve also held ‘open rehearsals’ and informal concerts at our practice venue.

We usually work towards at least one concert /performance at the end of each term.

    1. Hi Carol,
We rehearse on Tuesday evenings during term time from 7.45 to 9.30. We’ve got an Open Rehearsal on Tuesday 6th March so that people can come and join us for an evening – with no fee and no pressure to join unless that’s what they choose. Otherwise turn up any Tuesday evening before the Easter break- we’d love to see you.

    2. Hi Carol,
We rehearse on Tuesday evenings ( during term time) at Elbow Lane Methodist Church Hall, Formby – from 7.45 -9.30 pm.
Now is a good time to join us as our next concert is not until July. Just turn up any Tuesday and you’ll be made welcome. You can try it out for two sessions for free to see if it suits you. We’re also holding an Open Rehearsal tomorrow 6th March 2018 as an opportunity for people to try us out and find out more about the choir. Feel free to ring if you want to know more. 1. I’ve just spoken to one of your members, Anne Skelton. I’m enquiring whether you be able to assist at my dear Mother’s funeral planned for Wednesday 2nd May at St Faiths Church, Crosby, at 1pm. I realise it’s very short notice but, we only received the funeral confirmation yesterday.
    Happy to discuss further.
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Chris,
My apologies for the delay in responding to your request but I’ve been away for a few days with limited access to the internet. I’m really sorry to hear about the death of your mother. You’ve asked if Sefton Ladies Choir might be able to sing at your Mother’s funeral on Wednesday and, given more time, we would certainly have liked to have helped. I took the opportunity to check the availability of our MD, Lynne Rogers and some of our choir members at our choir rehearsal tonight and unfortunately due to prior commitments it just isn’t going to be possible for us to sing at your mother’s funeral tomorrow. This is always going to be a difficult time for you and your family and I do hope the day goes as well as can be expected, with the opportunity to celebrate a life well lived.
I wish you well for the future
Alison ( Gibbon) on behalf of Sefton Ladies Choir
